Nevalbine is a semi-synthetic drug that is taken from the leaves of the plant called periwinkle. As such, it is considered as a 'plant alkaloid'. It is a chemotherapy medicine generally for the treatment of lung cancer, but has also been used to treat mesothelioma.
Navelbine (also called Vinorelbine) blocks the reproduction and division of cells, hence killing them. It has been recorded to have a slightly better success rate in treating mesothelioma than other chemotherapy medications.
This chemotherapy drug is often administered in conjunction with another treatment, either combined chemotherapy or surgery. It takes about one hour to administer this drug through intravenous infusion once a week.
Before the start of any therapy, a discussion with your doctor is very important. Navelbine is not recommended for patients who also have physical problems with the blood, bone marrow, liver, lungs and nerves.
You also need to inform the physician should there be any serious side effects whilst under Navelbine. Any of these side effects may take place:
*Bleeding, bloody stools and other blood problems
*Severe case of constipation
*Coughing, shortness of breath and other lung problems
*Manifestation of allergies such as difficulty in breathing, closing of the throat and swollen face, lips or tongue
*Pain in the abdomen
*Reduced functions of the bone marrow
Other side effects that are typical of chemotherapy treatment may also be likely to occur. These include:
*Bowel problems
*Dizziness
*Inflammation of the lips
*Loss of appetite
*Loss of hair
*Minor fatigue
*Nausea and Vomiting
*Sores in the mouth

There is also a noticeable decrease in the functionality of the immune system. The patient must stay away from sick persons as he is more susceptible to any kind of infection.
Any and all side effects should be communicated to the doctor for proper handling, regardless of how little they appear to be. You may also document the progress of your treatment so that you remain organized.
